Probation FAQs
1. How will I know that I am on Academic Probation for NCAS or UC- N?
When you meet one of the conditions, you are automatically placed on academic probation. However, even though the probationary status is automatic, students who are on probation may receive a notification letter informing them of their academic status. This letter is sent to the student’s email address that is listed with the Registrar’s Office.
2. What are my restrictions while on Academic Probation?
If your college affiliation (home school) is the Newark College of Arts and Sciences, school 21, you are limited to enrolling in only 12 credits each semester. If your home school is University College, school 62, the maximum amount of credits that can be taken is 6 credits each semester.
Some students may be placed on an Academic Contract which will outline and monitor their academic progress toward attaining an acceptable grade point average. The contract may include additional restrictions (limitations on summer and winter course enrollments, mandatory enrollment of certain courses, referrals to certain support groups, etc.). Failure to comply with the contract may put students in jeopardy of being academically dismissed. Contracts will be voided once the student is off probation.
3. Can I participate in the social organizations on campus?
Students who are on academic probation may be prohibited from participating in certain organizations. Probationary students are not allowed to hold official positions in any organization on campus.
4. Will the “probationary” status be indicated on my transcript?
No. ”Academic” Probation is not indicated on a student’s University transcript; However, “Disciplinary” Probation is indicated on a student’s official transcript.
5. What happens to my Financial Aid?
If students on academic probation are restricted to less than 12 credits, it may have an effect on their financial aid status. Also, the academic probationary status may indicate that you are not making satisfactory academic progress towards the degree. By not earning enough degree credits in a specified time frame your financial aid award could be impacted. The Office of Financial Aid should be contacted for further information.
6. How do I remove the academic probationary status, and return to good academic standing?
Once the cumulative grade point average and / or term grade point averages increases to 2.000 or higher, the student is no longer on academic probation.
Suspension FAQs
1. What does it mean to be Academically Suspended?
A student whom is academically suspended will not be permitted to take courses at Rutgers University (all campuses) for one semester. This does not include summer and winter sessions.
2. How will I be notified that I was Academically Suspended?
A student will be notified of the academic suspension via email. The email notification will be sent to their offical Rutgers email address.
3. How do I appeal my Academic Suspension?
A student has the right to appeal academic suspension on the grounds of technical error (e.g., there were fewer than two consecutive semesters of enrollment with a semester grade-point average below 2.0) or extenuating circumstances (e.g., severe medical problems or family crisis). An error of omission on the part of the college is not sufficient grounds to reinstating a student on appeal if satisfactory progress toward the degree has not been made.
Student appeals must occur in writing within 5 working days of the date of the email of suspension. To appeal academic suspension, a student must fill out the Scholastic Standing Suspension Appeal stating the specific reasons for the appeal, together with any other supportive material that may be relevant to the case, including medical claims, etc. The appeal must be submitted to the Scholastic Standing Committee, c/o Office of Academic Services, 312 Hill Hall, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, Newark, NJ 07102.
Upon review of the appeal letter and supporting documents, the Scholastic Standing Committee may reinstate a suspended student. Students are notified in writing of the committee's decision which is final.
