In a new video, SASN Dean Jacqueline Mattis acknowledged the challenges and struggles of the past year while she urged listeners to think about what it means to be part of a larger community and to hold on to hope.
In the message, which is interwoven with a brand new video recorded remotely by the Rutgers University-Newark Chorus singing "Be the Change", Mattis said "The thing that we want to hold on to, the thing that we need to hold on to is the fact that hope is not only something that is possible, it's actually a responsibility."
"Those of us who can hold on to the possibilities that lie ahead, can hold on to the options of transformation and that is what's going to allow us to be able to survive and to hold to each other in the future."
The Rutgers University-Newark Chorus, led by Brian Harlow, is a choral ensemble with a local and international reputation. The choir is open to all and members include undergraduates, graduate students, staff, and alumni of both Rutgers-Newark and the New Jersey Institute of Technology. The chorus has been operating remotely since March 2020 and recently held a live virtual winter concert, including three new virtual choir videos recorded during Fall 2020 and highlights from previous concerts held at St. Mary's Parish in Newark. The concert can be viewed on YouTube.
