After 16 years of exile in Brazil, Ricardo Reis returns to Portugal. 1936, the year of all danger: Mussolini's Fascism, Hitler's Nazism, the terrible Spanish Civil War, and Salazar's Estado Novo. Two women, Lídia and Marcenda, are Ricardo Reis' carnal and impossible passions. This adaptation of José Saramago’s novel chronicles the final year in the life of the title character Ricardo Reis, one of the many heteronyms used by the Portuguese writer Fernando Pessoa.
