“I See Myself in You”: A Conversation with Deborah Willis and Hank Willis Thomas

Taking inspiration from the title of their family portrait, “Sometimes I See Myself In You,” Deborah Willis and Hank Willis Thomas will be the featured speakers for the fall 2018 L+M Development Partners Lecture Series at Rutgers University-Newark organized by Clement A. Price Institute. Followed by a conversation which Professor Salamishah Tillet will moderate, their lectures will address the themes of art, activism, and racial legacies as well as present from their latest projects with Shine Portrait Studio and New Arts at Express Newark and beyond.
On the occasion of Shine Portrait Studio’s featured exhibition at Express Newark Deborah Willis, In Pursuit of Beauty: Imaging Closets in Newark and Beyond, a joint book launch event will take place immediately after the lecture. This will feature Deborah Willis’s work published by Shine, as well as a new book All Things Being Equal, by Hank Willis Thomas’s published by Aperture.
Express Newark, is a new community-university collaborative space dedicated to exploring the role of the public arts and humanities in the continued development of Newark.
