International Applicants
As a well-ranked U.S. university, Rutgers-Newark is proud to host many talented international students from all parts of the world. Listed below are key requirements for international applications.
- Certification of English language skills (TOEFL IBT score of at least 94, or an IELTS academic score of at least 7). Use the ETS institution code 2790 and send scores to Rutgers. TOEFL/IELTS scores are accepted until 2 years after the exam date.
- GRE Exam is optional (The Chemistry GRE is not required, but is recommended). GRE scores are accepted until 5 years after the exam date.
- Recommendation letters (3) from professors, supervisors, or the equivalent. In the American school system, recommendation letters are very important and not just a formal requirement. They should be as detailed and as distinctive as possible. Ideally, letter writers should have had a direct professional relationship with the applicant, and should be familiar with the applicant's strengths and overall professional personality.
- Personal statement. Again, this is an important part of the application. The statement is usually about 500 words long, explaining in detail why the applicant is drawn to the Chemistry program at Rutgers-Newark, and touches on why the applicant will succeed as a Ph.D. student.
- CV (curriculum vitae). A CV should summarize your academic and professional background, listing education, degrees, research and/or teaching experiences, publications, and/or any other information relevant to your qualifications for graduate admission.
- Transcripts. Upload undergraduate (and if applicable, graduate) transcripts as supporting materials. The minimum required GPA is 3.0.
Application Deadlines for International Students: 11/1 for the Spring semester; 3/1 for the Fall Semester.
The New Jersey/New York Metropolitan Area
- Situated in the business and financial center of New Jersey, Rutgers University-Newark is within 15 minutes of all major transportation systems, including Newark International Airport, New Jersey Transit, PATH, and Amtrak railroad lines. Surrounding areas include Manhattan (20 minutes by rail), Philadelphia (1 hour by rail), and Washington, DC (3 hours, Amtrak).
In recent years, students from China, Germany, India, Iran, Italy, Korea, the Philippines, Poland, Turkey, and Ukraine have received graduate degrees from the Chemistry Department at Rutgers University-Newark and secured attractive jobs in industry and academia.
