The Honors College recruits and retains curious, motivated students who enroll in departments and schools throughout Rutgers University–Newark. Students join us as freshmen, transfers, and current students.

For Freshmen:

The Honors College reaches out to admitted students on the University’s online admissions platform, where students are invited to apply for admission to the incoming Honors College cohort. Most of our students are offered merit scholarships or other forms of financial aid, but those scholarships are not administered by or awarded through the Honors College.

Typically, students who are invited to apply to the Honors College have distinguished themselves through some combination of their academic records, student leadership, and extracurricular activities. Students who join the Honors College may enroll at any of the schools at Rutgers University–Newark. To learn more, contact us at honorsn@newark.rutgers.edu or at 973-353-5860.

For Transfers:

The Honors College strives to be a welcoming and supportive environment for transfer students, who make up a significant portion of our population. Some transfer students join us in the fall, or mid-year in the spring, after either completing an application on the University's admissions website or applying directly to the Honors College. We work with transfer students to design a curriculum that is customized around your major and career interests and can place you in undergraduate research opportunities soon after you begin your studies at Rutgers.

For more information on how to apply or schedule an in-person interview, contact us at honorsn@newark.rutgers.edu or at 973-353-5860.

For Current Students:

Some students discover they are interested in research, or that they have strengths and skills in an academic field that they did not know about until they began college. Some students meet Honors College students and decide, “this is where I want to be.” Others are referred to us by a professor.

For those students, we are happy to welcome you to the Honors College, and invite you to apply to join us in the Fall semester. Typically, students who join us will have at least a 3.5 GPA and be in their freshman or sophomore year of study. Our application window will be open through mid-March until late May each year. Check this page for more information during those months, visit us (Room 219-225, Engelhard Hall), email us at honorsn@newark.rutgers.edu, or call us at 973-353-5860. The Director, Assistant Director, or our staff will be happy to talk about what opportunities the Honors College and our supportive student cohort can offer you.
