The Women's & Gender Studies Program was established in Newark in 1970. Today, the Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies program offers an Undergraduate Major and Minor, a Minor in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Studies, as well as a Graduate Concentration in Gender Studies. The Graduate Concentration is open to students enrolled in graduate programs in English, History, Liberal Studies, Political Science, Public Administration, Global Affairs, Criminal Justice, and American Studies.
How You Will Learn
Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies courses provide a context for the study of gender that takes into account issues of race, ethnicity, class, ability, national origin, religion and sexual orientation. Students involved in the Women's and Gender Studies Program take classes ranging from core courses like Feminist History and Theory and the Politics of Sexuality to a range of Topics courses like Human Trafficking and Gender and the Media. Graduates of WGS pursue careers in teaching, writing, public advocacy and many other fields.
