SPANISH MAJOR

A major in Spanish consists of a minimum of thirty (30) credits with a grade of C or better in each course.  Remember: you need 120 credits to graduate! You can track your progress to graduation on Degree Navigator.

Spanish majors at the junior or senior level are eligible to apply for the prestigious Elpidio Laguna Memorial Scholarship. Eligible Spanish majors and minors will be invited to join the national honor society Sigma Delta Pi.

Major requirements: 30 credits total (up to half accepted as transfer credits from other institutions)

No more than 6 credits in skills courses (including 131, 132, 203, 204 and Spanish for professional purposes) may count toward the major.  Only one course in English translation may be used towards the major.

I. Core Requirements (6 credits)

Spanish 207: Intro to Spanish Literature                                 3 credits

Spanish 208: Intro to Spanish-American Literature              3 credits

II. Elective Courses (see list on website) (21 credits)
Elective courses must include:

  • 2 courses in Spanish Peninsular Literature at the 300 or 400 level
  • 2 courses in Latin American Literature at the 300 or 400 level
  • 1 course in Linguistics or Translation     

III. A 400-level course (see list on website) (3 credits)
