You must apply to the Department of Social Work and be accepted into the program to be considered a Social Work Major.  

Applications are due no later than December 1 to be considered as a Major in the Department of Social Work through the School of Arts and Sciences - Newark. Please complete the online survey (click on the "Apply Now" link above) fully in order to be considered for the Major. Declaring the Social Work major requires

  • Minimum GPA of 2.7
  • One completed semester at RU-N (you can apply before completing your first semester)
  • Grade of C or better in a required social work class (subject: 910) taken at RU-N (you can be currently enrolled in this class to complete the application)
  • Completion of the Online Application Form, including the submission of the following through the application:
    • Signed Declaration of Major Form 
    • 1-2 page essay answering the following questions (please carefully proofread your essay for proper grammar, word usage, and readability): 
      • Share why you wish to become a professional Social Worker 
      • Describe what factors contributed to your decision to apply for the Social Work Major
      • Explain why you feel that you can succeed in this rigorous course of study
      • Identify one aspect of the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics that is relevant to you and explain why. 


The major requirements include course work and internship.  Academic credit is NOT given for life or work experience.

A minor in Social Work/Social Welfare is NOT available.
