Major and Minor Physics Requirements

There a two major courses of study offered for undergraduate students in the Physics department of Rutgers University-Newark, Physics and Applied Physics. A minor of Physics is also offered. To learn the course requirements for each major and minor please select the option below:

Course Requirements for a Major in Physics at Newark

The required core courses include Physics lectures and lab classes totaling 39 credits from the following courses:

Students may substitute 21:750:203 & 204 (General Physics I & II) for 21:750:213 & 214 (University Physics I & II) with permission by the Physics department. Please contact the Physics Undergraduate Coordinator, Dr. Diane Jammula.

A Best Grades GPA of 2.5 must be completed for all courses and only a grade of D or lower for any class will not count towards the major requirement.

The Mathematics requirement totals 11 credits and includes the following courses:

The electives requirement totals 6 credits chosen from the following courses:

Course Requirements for a Minor in Physics at Newark

The minor requirements include Physics lectures and lab classes totaling 10 credits from the following courses:

The electives requirement totals 10 credits from Physics (750) Core courses at 300 level or above.

A minimum grade of C must be achieved for all courses, no courses with a grade less than or equal to D may be used for the minor requirements.
