The Federated Department of History at Rutgers-Newark and NJIT includes 25 and 9 members respectively. As a Federated Department, students from Rutgers and NJIT are able to take history courses offered on both campuses during the academic year as well as during the two summer terms. Additionally, the Federated Department administers two graduate programs, a Masters of Arts in History and a Masters of Arts in Teaching History. Members of the faculty also participate in the following programs at Rutgers: the American Studies Program, the Women’s and Gender Studies Program, the Division of Global Affairs, and the Institute on Ethnicity, Culture and the Modern Experience. Several other Rutgers majors and minors are contained within the Federated Department, including the major and minor in Ancient and Medieval Civilizations, the minor in Asian Studies, and the minor in Film Studies. The NJIT history faculty also administer a new B.A. program in Law, Technology, and Culture, which serves as the pre-law major at NJIT.
While teaching and publishing in a variety of historical periods, subjects and geographic regions, many faculty members at Rutgers-Newark specializes in gender history, urban history, and the history of race and ethnic identity. The faculty at NJIT specialize in historical studies that appeal to students attending a science and technological university, including the history of technology, the history of medicine and health, environmental history, and the history of media and communication.
Faculty members of the Federated Department of History are also accomplished scholars. Recently, Federated history faculty have published books with world-renowned academic publishers including Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, University of Chicago Press, Johns Hopkins University Press, and the University of California Press, and also received prestigious fellowships, research awards and writing awards from institutions such as Harvard University, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Smithsonian Institute, the Woodrow Wilson Center, and the American Historical Association.
