Entry Requirements for PhD in Environmental Science

Undergraduate Degree:
Minimum BS in any Science/Engineering Program with an environmental emphasis. There is a strict university requirement of a minimum GPA of 3.0 for entry into any graduate degree program. However, the department looks for a minimum GPA above 3.4 for entry into the PhD program.

 

General GRE Exam:
Submission of GRE scores are optional for the PhD in Environmental Science Application.
 
If submitting, GRE scores must be from 3 to 5 years prior to the application date; GRE scores from more than 5 years prior to the application date will not be accepted. Candidate must obtain more than a 3.0 on the written part of the GRE (strict university requirement for any PhD program at the university).
 
Personal Statement and CV/Resume  
A personal statement and CV or Resume are required with the application. 
In the personal statement we encourage you to address the following questions: 
  1. What are your research interests and career goals?
  2. What past experience makes you a good candidate for the PhD program in Environmental Science at Rutgers University Newark? 
  3. Why would the PhD program in Environmental Science at Rutgers University be a good fit your you? 
We strongly encourage applicants to reach out to potential advisors before applying for the PhD. A list of faculty members can be found here. Dr. Khadempour has developed some suggestions for emailing potential advisors.
If you have identified potential advisors, make sure to list them in your personal statement. 
 
In the CV/Resume, make sure that you highlight all past research experience including summer and extended research projects, conference presentations, and peer-reviewed publications.  

International Students:
University requires the TOEFL exam for an applicant from any non-English speaking country. There are three types of this exam and the minimum scores vary depending on which exam you take. The scores are as follows:
  1. Computer: 213 minimum
  2. Paper: 550 minimum
  3. Internet: 94-101
 
Rutgers will take a TOEFL exam result taken within 2 years of the date of application to the program.
The minimum acceptable IELTS (English proficiency) score is 6.5.
