Our graduate students are constantly involved in other activities outside of their research. Carolina Caro Cano is currently a part of the Rutgers Sloan STARs Program, a peer mentoring program designed to boost the success of underrepresented groups in the Geosciences, and this is what she has to say about her experience so far: "The Sloan STAR program has allowed me to assess myself and improve as a scientist and person. It has also given me a chance to see how the Geosciences can be used to impact our local communities positively. In one of our field trips, we took a tour through the Ironbound in Newark to witness the importance of advocating for environmental justice. We finished our tour at this local farm, where local community members make a difference by growing fresh food and providing a small green space for everyone to visit."
