Course Description: This course will focus on the application of fundamental geologic concepts to environmental problems, with emphasis on hazardous earth processes; resources and pollution; and society and policy. Coursework will involve text and journal readings, discussions, presentations and written essays.
Course objectives: To provide students with foundational knowledge in Geology in the context of current environmental issues and the role of society. Students are expected to:
(1) gain both a qualitative and quantitative comprehension of the fundamental geological processes that are relevant to elucidating and addressing environmental problems
(2) invoke geological science in the critical assessment of the impact of advances in society and (geo)technology on environmental systems
(3) hone scientific communication skills by oral and written methods in the context of concepts, technology and policy in Environmental Geology.
