The Department of Africana Studies has a hands-on approach to advisement. Although faculty advisors are not assigned, and students have the flexibility to seek advisement from any member of our faculty, a faculty member will be suggested based on the student's interests at the time of declaration. Our faculty schedule office hours every semester. The list will be made available on the office hours page at the start of each semester.
To get the most out of your visit, you should bring a copy of your current transcript, major/minor worksheet, and identify any questions/concerns that you want to discuss prior to your meeting. Ms. Christina Strasburger also serves as a department advisor and can be consulted by all prospective majors and minors. She can be reached by email at cstras@rutgers.edu or by phone at 973-353-3902.
Remember that academic advising is invaluable to reaching your goal of graduation. Your academic advisor is someone who can help you monitor your academic progress; provide information in designing, developing, and implementing individual academic plans; provide you with letters of reference when you are applying for graduate programs or looking for employment; and link you to resources in getting connected on campus and in the community.
