Jennifer Bernstein

Jennifer Bernstein came to Rutgers from The University of the Arts (Philadelphia), and Pratt Institute (New York City) where she was a faculty member for 12 years and 4 years, respectively.

 

For the last 16 years Jennifer has taught extensively at all levels of undergraduate and graduate design education. At the University of the Arts, she spearheaded the integration of motion and the exploration of multiple media as a venue for visual narrative in the graphic design curriculum. Teaching at the graduate level at Pratt, she continued her research into narrative across media through shaping curriculum focused on the utilization of technology in communication design, as well as teaching design theory and graduate seminar.

 

Jennifer is also an accomplished design professional. In 1998 she founded her own New York based firm, Level Design Group, which specializes in design across multiple media platforms. Jennifer’s expertise in typography and visual narrative has helped her shape communications for clients such as Deutsche Bank, The Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum, HBO, the NYC Department of Education, P.S. 1/ MoMA, and MetLife.

 

Prior to founding the firm, Jennifer was a Design Director at several New York City firms including Balsmeyer & Everett, Inc. where she designed title sequences for feature films including: Fargo (dir. Coen Brothers), Girl 6 (Spike Lee), The First Wives Club (Hugh Wilson), and The People Vs. Larry Flynt (Milos Forman).

 

Her film work has been featured at The Sundance Film Festival, “New Directors, New Films” at MoMA, The New York Film Festival at Lincoln Center, on HBO and PBS. Her work has been published in The New York Times, Type In Motion (Rizzoli), Making and Breaking The Grid (Rockport), I.D. Magazine, and in the recent Typographic Design: Form & Communication, 6th ed. (Wiley). Her work won Best of Category in the I.D. Magazine Design Annual, a Create Award, and has been exhibited at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York City.

 

Jennifer holds a B.A. magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa from Brown University, and an M.F.A. in Graphic Design from the Yale School of Art.
